Irish History Online Scope and Aims
Scope
Irish History Online (IHO) provides listings of books and articles dealing with Irish history of any period from early historic times to the present. It is a guide to the work of historians rather than to original sources, unless they have been edited and republished by historians. The catalogue is not an exhaustive list of every known publication relating to Irish history. However, we will continuously strive to make it accurate, up to date and an essential resource for the study of Irish history at any level. Irish History Online is free of charge to users.
IHO lists monographs, editions, articles from international, national and local history journals, and essays in collective volumes. It also provides comprehensive bibliographic coverage of the individual chapters in edited books, conference proceedings and essay collections. IHO provides indexes of subjects, places and people. Its strength lies in its near comprehensive coverage of publications since the 1930s.
In a significant new development, work was undertaken in 2018 and 2019 inputting data on theses on Irish history that were completed since the 1930s. This is a work-in-progress and the thesis listings are not yet complete.
Material is included irrespective of place or language of publication, although coverage is most comprehensive for works published in Ireland and Britain.
Aims
IHO is a catalogue of bibliographic information focused on the broad area of the history of Ireland. Through the dedicated work of volunteers and the online submissions by authors and historians of their published material, IHO will continue to update its database and be free of charge to users. Searches can be made by author, editor, title of book or article, journal title, series, subject classification, place, person as subject, date of publication, etc.
There are numerous online resources that complement IHO, a comprehensive list of which can be found here.
