| Notes | The Belvedere was built 1725-7 for Sir Robert Furnese and repaired in 1813 or soon after. The article rejects the previous attribution to Lord Burlington and posits that Campbell was the architect. It also includes a general analysis of classical towers in England and (to a lesser extent) Scotland and Ireland in the period to 1822. An appendix provides a biography of Furnese and considers his connections with New Romney. Further appendices describe the building of the tower in 1725-7 and its repair c.1813. |
