| Notes | The popular novels of Canon Joseph Guinan (1863-1932)are examined as sources for Irish social history with particular reference to Catholic clerical attitudes in the period. along with some acute descriptions of everyday phenomena, they idealise the large farmer class as successors to the old Catholic aristocracy and agitation, display bitter hostility towards the Protestant/Orange minority in the region, complacently declare it outrageous that state inspectors shoudl expect clerical school managers to improve conditions in the schools they control, and welcome the Gaelic revival and the Irish war of Independence as shutting out dangerous foreign influences, while expressing some apprehension at the vioence and social upheavals brouht by the guerrilla war. |
