| Notes | "First published in New Ireland Review. 1898-1900" -- T.p. verso.|Edited by|First published as a series of occasional articles 1898-1900; published in book form 1905. This edition includes editoral introduction outlining Moran's career and relating his views to contemporary British debates on "national efficiency". Manifesto by a controversial advocate of Irish cultural nationalism who went on to found a weekly journal THE LEADER (which he edited until his death in 1936). Argues that Ireland can never achieve complete separation from Britain but can achieve social and economic renewal through revived national self-confidence gained by renewed commitment to the Gaelic tradition and to Catholicism. Notorious for sectarian view of Irishness and attacks on the Celtic Revival as an Anglo-Irish conspiracy, but has many shrewd comments on Irish society of the period. Strong influence from the contemporary British "national efficiency" movement. |
