| Notes | Analyses THE ORANGEMAN, a 1915 novel by the Ulster-American J.H. Finlay inspired by a return visit to Co. Monaghan from where his ancestor, the schoolmastrer William Finlay, emigrated in the 1840s. Contrasts his idealised view of early nineteenth century Monaghan Orangeism with an account of the career of the notorious Monaghan Orange leader in that period, Sam Gray (based on secondary sources); discusses how Finlay's narrative draws on stereotypes of Irishness which are replicated in later "Troubles narratives" and on imagery of America as the Land of Promise found in other depictions of Ulster Protestant emigration to the USA. |
